After Vilsack was elected, Jackie became a high school government teacher, taking her first job teaching in Perry, and later in Ames and Johnston. Those years spent teaching in rural and urban schools reaffirmed Jackie’s belief that all kids, no matter their location, deserved a world class education.&nbsp; “I loved having Jackie as a government teacher…She always treated me with so much respect and kindness. When I became a history teacher myself, I wanted to emulate Jackie Norris.” - Rebecca, Jackie’s former student Her commitment to public service led her to work under both Democratic and Republican presidents. Jackie served as Chief of Staff to Michelle Obama in the White House championing efforts to make kids healthier and supporting military spouses. She later launched the Corporate Institute at President George H. W. Bush’s Points of Light organization, where she built out volunteerism at companies across the United States.<h3>Bucking the Status Quo.&nbsp;</h3><img src="https://run.imgix.net/35da0dfe-dee3-4daf-b19b-1e7f2a41b51c/ca33d33f-5e2b-4426-97c9-8373644dbd10/20793f7e-a5b0-4d75-9162-b5a6fa661712.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=449%2C262%2C3337%2C2810&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" variant="framed">Jackie went to work for Goodwill, overseeing their central Iowa operations across 12 counties. While there, she standardized the minimum wage to $15/hour, raising wages for hundreds of Goodwill employees in Iowa. It was also at this time, as her sons entered high school, that Jackie got involved with the local school board. She ran and won a seat, quickly becoming an effective leader fighting to close gaps in learning loss and ensure students have mental health support they need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As chair of the school board, Jackie led the district with a plan to implement phone-free schools, after a pilot program run by teachers and administrators at Hoover High School, on Des Moines’ north side, demonstrated significant improvements in attention, learning, and mental health. Citing the success of the Des Moines initiative, a similar program was later adopted by Governor Kim Reynolds to improve academic outcomes statewide.&nbsp; Jackie and her husband, John, have raised three boys. They sent their youngest, Sam, off to college at Grinnell last year. Their oldest, twins Hunter and Cole, are enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point (Hunter) and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs (Cole).&nbsp; “As a teacher and a school board member, you see the invisible burdens families are carrying. Des Moines, IA – Last night, Republican-controlled Congress shut down the federal government over Republicans’ refusal to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits, which will result in health care premiums doubling for tens of thousands of Iowans. In response, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Jackie Norris released the following response:&nbsp; “Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. It’s the responsibility of my opponent Ashley Hinson and her party to keep the government open. Instead, they’re shutting down the government all to force healthcare premiums to double for tens of thousands of Iowans.&nbsp; “Earlier this summer, Ashley Hinson had a chance to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits to avert rate hikes which will send health care costs soaring. Instead, she voted to gut Medicaid to give tax cuts to the richest Americans and make life even more expensive for everyday Iowa families. As a result, her votes are raising our health care, housing and energy costs, shutting down rural hospitals, and eliminating funding mental health care for our kids. After thoughtful consideration, I have decided that I will n​o longer be a candidate for the U.S. Senate in the Democratic primary.The most important thing to me is that Iowa elects a Democratic U.S. Senator who will put Iowans, and our state, first. Because in this moment we need a voice in Washington who will serve as a check on this President, and is focused on delivering for our families.&nbsp;The recent Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent crisis demanded my full attention as Board Chair and, overnight, put the School Board, our community, and me personally in the crosshairs of vicious and coordinated attacks. Those realities took time and oxygen away from the work I set out to do: stand up for our kids and families — and the backbone of our communities, their educators and caregivers.As Chair of the School Board, we stepped up and are bringing accountability—leading with grace, transparency, and resolve.
